Officers rise to their challenges |

Both Senior Superintendent (Operations) Kowloon East B J Smith and Chief Inspector (Operations) Kowloon East Simon Southgate have successfully completed their ultra-marathons. BJ who took part in the 100-km "Sunrise to Sunset" Ultra-marathon in Mongolia on July 21 completed the course in a very respectable 17 hours and 15 minutes, coming home in 18th place out of a field of 43. "The whole event was a great experience. The scenery was spectacular and the race was very well organised. I met some great people, and the local Mongolians went out of their way to make us feel welcome. I would really recommend this event to anyone interested in taking part in ultra-marathons and endurance events. "Now.............where did I put my legs?" said BJ. Simon took part in Racing The Planet's 250-km "Gobi March" between June 27 and July 3. He completed the course in 42 hours and 12 minutes, coming 39th out of a field of 153. "This was a very difficult event, a lot more challenging than the Sahara Race I completed in 2008. The terrain was more difficult, and the temperatures at times were in the high 40s. A lot of competitors struggled with the conditions, and even professional athletes had to drop out. I am really pleased that I was able to finish". Simon is attempting to complete the "Grand Slam" and the 4-Desert Series. He has already signed up for his next race, which will take place in March 2011 in the Atacama Desert, Chile. If everything goes according to plan, he will complete the series in November 2012 in Antarctica. Simon is completing the series to raise money for "Operation Breakthrough" and the St Baldrick's Children's Cancer Foundation. If you would like to sponsor him or know more about these charities, get in touch with him direct (PEN: cip-ops-ke). Simon has produced a slideshow of the photographs taken during the 2010 Gobi March, and is happy to send it to anyone that is interested. All you have to do is send him an e-mail. |
