Commissioner Tang King-shing attended "Iftar", an evening meal for breaking the daily fasting during Ramadan, at Kowloon Mosque on August 16.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, during which Muslims refrain from eating and drinking from dawn till sunset.

In recognition of the long-standing relationship between the local Police and the Muslim community, Acting Kowloon West Regional Commander Peter Else, Yau Tsim District (YTDIST) Commander Lau Yip-shing, YTDIST Commander (Designate) Wong Kwok-wai and YTDIST Deputy Commander Pang Shu-hung were invited to attend this auspicious function.

Other distinguished guests included Chairman of the Legislative Council, Mr Tsang Yok-sing, Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Raymond Young, Consul- Generals and dignitaries from various organisations.

In support of the Force Strategic Direction on "Engaging the Community", YTDIST has adopted a progressive approach to enhance police services to the Non-ethnic Chinese (NEC) communities, according to their needs and requirements.

YTDIST has incorporated NEC policing into its Formation Action Plan as an operational priority. It has also launched a series of initiatives to support the four strategic directions set by the Kowloon West Sub-working Group on NEC, namely actively engaging the NEC communities; enhancing the professional qualities and racial sensitivity of officers; strengthening NEC crime prevention; and supporting frontline units in serving NEC.

YTDIST's forthcoming major initiative will be an Anti-drug Variety Show on November 27 for both local and NEC families, in a bid to promote social harmony. Many NEC community leaders, non-government organisations serving the ethnic minorities, and NEC schools have pledged full support for the event.
