Ms Guo Li, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government (LOCPG) in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), gave a talk at a Management Development Programme (MDP) seminar on Police College's Wong Chuk Hang campus on August 6. The seminar drew an audience of over 200 participants. Ms Guo, specialising in foreign trade and economic affairs, was a prominent official both in the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Japan and Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation before taking up her present post in September 2003. The theme of the seminar was "New China: Economic Development over the last 30 years". During her talk, Ms Guo made a thorough analysis of the economic development of China in the past 30 years as well as the challenges during the development. She pointed out that the opening-up and economic reforms of China have enhanced the country's economic strength and participation on the world economic stage. The continuous betterment and enrichment of people's lives were achieved simultaneously in the course of the reforms. Ms Guo's candid and detailed sharing in her one-and-a-half-hour talk enabled participants to gain a deeper understanding of China's economic reform as well as the development of her economic relations with foreign countries. The seminar also stimulated thoughts on the impact of economic development on the strategic directions for policing. Two other MDP seminars on "Mutual understanding between the community and the Force" and "Human Rights" are scheduled for September 20 and October 14 respectively. More information of the seminars is available on Noticeboard.
