WCC Members interact with NEC communities |
||
To offer its members access to other cultures, the Hong Kong Police World Cultures Club (WCC) has teamed up with the Centre for Harmony and Enhancement of Ethnic Minority Residents (CHEER) to provide a series of volunteer services for Non-ethnic Chinese (NEC) residents. The centre is one of the support service centres funded by the Government to provide services to the NEC communities. WCC members took part in three activities between late June and mid-August. The first activity was provision of tutoring for NEC kindergarten and primary school children. Besides helping them with homework, the "tutors" also played games with them and told them stories in a bid to arouse their interest in, and understanding of, the Chinese language. In the second activity, WCC members assisted in leading 90 NEC residents from different racial groups, such as Indian, Pakistani, Nepali, Indonesian and Thai, to visit Lamma Island, and Tai O and Ngong Ping on Lantau Island on August 7 and 8. Though they speak different languages, the common language was their smiles and sincerity. During the visit to Lamma Island, an Indonesian lady carried a very heavy bag of about 20 to 30 pounds containing food and soup she prepared for the CHEER leaders and police volunteers. Even more touching was that she got up as early as 4 am to prepare the food. During the volunteer services, WCC members took the opportunities to introduce police work and drive home the message that the Force is committed to providing quality services to the NEC communities. In response, the NEC residents said they appreciated the Force's commitment to NEC community policing. WCC will continue to organise more activities to boost members' interest in other cultures. It appreciates that interaction with other cultural groups can go a long way toward enhancing understanding between the Force and the NEC communities.
