'Smart Summer' for youngsters

Yuen Long District has worked with Yuen Long District Secondary School Heads Association and Non-government Organisations in the district to roll out a large-scale summer anti-juvenile crime programme known as "Smart Summer".

Sponsored by Yuen Long District Fight Crime Committee, the programme offered a host of activities, including a leadership camp, visits to correctional institutes, seminars conducted by rehabilitated young drug addicts, variety shows and a carnival.

Early last month, Police Community Relations Office officers and police volunteers ran a three-day leadership training camp with the Evangelical Lutheran Church for 100 youngsters. To boost the youngsters' courage and confidence to steer clear of crimes and drugs, police officers resorted to the novel way of leaping into the sea with them from a high point at a pier.

One of the campers, Lai Hang-hang, said she had learned the meaning of perseverance and knowledge on crimes and drugs. After her training, she is expected to help her school organise a "School Health Week" and work with her schoolmates on a "Healthy School Campus" project. Outside her school, Hang-hang will help social workers set up a "Mobile Youth Health Station" in Yuen Long.
