Efforts to promote safe cycling

Cycling has become not only a leisure sport but also something that encompasses health, skills, socialising and fashion.

Most cycling accidents occurred on the road involving delivery workers. But for those that happened on cycling tracks, "losing balance", "riding too fast", "insufficient skill" and "overlooking the importance of protective gears" were contributing factors.

Traffic Headquarter, Road Safety Council, Sha Tin District Council's Working Group on Road Safety, Road Safety Patrol, and Road Safety Traffic New Territories South jointly staged a promotion event at the Sha Tin Amphitheatre on August 22.

Among those officiating at the event were Road Safety Campaign Committee Chairman, Mr Yu Kam-kee; Sha Tin District Councillor, Mr Cheng Chor-kwong; Senior Assistant Commissioner of Road Safety Patrol, Mr Tony Cheung; Sha Tin District Commander Richard Morgan; Acting Chief Superintendent (Traffic) Chan Ka-kit; and Acting Senior Superintendent (Traffic New Territories South) James Woolcott Brown.

Messages on cycling safety, cycling regulations, causes of cycling accidents, and in particular those on wearing safety helmet and obeying road regulations, were disseminated to over 1,000 participants through games with the support of members of the Hong Kong All Star Sports Association Limited Soccer Team and movie stars Dennis To and Rose Chan.

The event reached a climax when Assistant Road Safety Officer of Traffic New Territories South, Station Sergeant Marco Wong, led over 100 cyclists onto the stage to make a pledge to support promotion of safe cycling.

The event came to a successful conclusion after Mr Woolcott Brown led about 100 cyclists to hand out copies of a leaflet on safe cycling to the public from the Sha Tin Amphitheatre to the Pak Shek Kok Promenade.
