Interns 'explore new world'

Two undergraduates, Yim Kwan-yin from the University of Hong Kong and Leung Tan-ni from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, spent their summer vacation working as Summer Interns, hoping for new experiences outside school. Instead of selling clothes at malls or coffee fetching at private conglomerates, they have garnered a more memorable work experience at the Complaints & Internal Investigations Branch (C&IIB). "Everyone in our age wanna get engaged in something different over the summer vacation, and this is what we have experienced," they said.

Working in the Complaint Against Police Office (CAPO), the two interns were assigned with completely different tasks, but both involved independent and analytical thinking and communicating with key personnel. Helping out with revamp of the Complaints Index and Statistics System (CISS) in the C&IIB Statistics Office, Kwan-yin reviewed the statistical system and recommended ways for enhancement. "I really get excited when I realise that my suggestions may be put into practice for the enhancement project," she said. "It is the first time I realise how a Statistics Office operates systematically. The way it operates is quite different from the system in book," she added.

"Life in CAPO is like exploring a new world," said Tan-ni, who was responsible for examining the different complaint systems in the private sector and the Early Management Interview initiative of Wan Chai District. Interviewing the Deputy District Commander and a representative of Cathay Pacific Airways was a great experience for her.

"Police work is full of varieties and challenges," Tan-ni said, finding what she was told during her job interview was so true. On the different challenges and ad hoc jobs she had come across, she affirmed: "CAPO has not only shown me conscientiousness at work, but also broadened my horizons and benefited my personal development."

While having made contributions to CAPO's projects, the two interns have also got an early foretaste of work, to the benefits of their careers.

"We cherry-picked the best ones from a number of talented applicants. I sincerely wish the two interns a bright and prosperous future," said CAPO Superintendent Siu Kit-hung.

The Interns liken their attachment to C&IIB to "exploring a new world"
