At the invitation of the Shenzhen Public Security Bureau, Superintendent (SP) Lee Kiu-ki and seven members of the Force Search Unit (FSU) recently attended a five-day experience-sharing programme on search and security screening in Shenzhen.

The bureau extended the invitation to FSU in a bid to beef up security for the 26th Summer Universiade, a sports meet for university students scheduled to take place in Shenzhen in August next year. A record number of 13 000 athletes, coaches and team officials are expected to take part in over 300 medal events in 24 disciplines.

Participating in the programme were 19 specialists from an anti-terrorist unit and the explosives and search unit of the Special Police Contingent. The contents of the programme included classroom lectures and practical exercises, covering the latest counter-terrorism information, updated search theories and techniques, and application of cutting-edge search equipment. The trainees were required to pass a practical exercise and a written examination.

After completing the programme, the trainees are expected to pass on what they had learned to over 10 000 police officers and volunteers who are to perform search and security duties for the Universiade.

One of the trainees, a Police Captain, pointed out that the experience-sharing programme was extremely professional and rich in content, adding that it was most useful to have exchanges with the experienced and knowledgeable speakers from Hong Kong.

In response, FSU's Acting Woman Sergeant Wong Wing-sze said: "Learning from the exercises based on real scenarios, both parties (Hong Kong and Shenzhen) can complement each other. I look forward to contributing more in future."

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the programme, SP Lee said: "The search and security screening exchange marks the close partnership between Shenzhen and Hong Kong officers, and serves as a prologue to more co-operation. I sincerely wish all those working for the Universiade in Shenzhen a very successful sporting event."
