New OSH Cadre members appointed |

Assistant Commissioner (Support) Peter Hunt presented letters to 17 newly recruited Inspectors from Major Formations on October 29, appointing them as the second batch of members of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Cadre. Over the coming years, the Cadre members are expected to brush up their OSH expertise in various areas of their work to fulfil their key roles to: * facilitate implementation of OSH policies and procedures; * build up a pool of OSH expertise at all levels within the Force that can be used to offer advice on complex, unique or major OSH issues; * thrash out initiatives to promote OSH throughout the Force; * advise various groups and committees on OSH matters; and * deliver OSH training. Commenting on the new blood for the OSH Cadre, Superintendent John Cameron, trainer of the earlier OSH Cadre, said: "It's great to see so many young and talented officers join the Cadre. People sometimes forget that OSH is about supporting frontline units, by preventing accidents and enabling them to do their job in a safe manner. I'm sure these people will be a great asset to the Cadre in achieving these goals." As officers were told during their initial briefing, the strength of the Cadre will be the transferable skills that members will pick up over the years in such things as non-financial risk management, contingency planning and concept of care. The new Cadre members will receive Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Their two-week intensive training started on November 15, after which CPD will follow in the form of visits to outside organisations to benchmark and learn from best practice on OSH issues. "As we close another chapter in the development of OSH in the Force, I see the formation of a Cadre, not only as the end of the beginning, but also the beginning of the end. As the Cadre accumulates knowledge and expertise, the Force will no longer have to rely on outside advice when dealing with complex safety issues in Police work," Mr Hunt noted.
