The annual Police Dragon Boat Charity Race held on Shing Mun River on October 30 raised $246 777 for needy elderly, in addition to promoting healthy lifestyles within the Force.

The funds will finance the Emergency Link Services provided by the Senior Citizen Home Safety Association.

Officers from Kowloon West not only dipped deep into their pockets for the charity race, but also looked for support by other donors, raising $100 000 and earning the trophy for the highest donation. Of this sum, $40 000 came from 35 directors of a charity organisation, The Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society, Kowloon.

Pitching in for the charity race were 62 teams comprising over 1 000 paddlers. The race started in earnest following the traditional "Eye-dotting"ceremony performed by Assistant Commissioner (Service Quality) Wong Fook-chuen and Auxiliary Police Commandant Yiu Yeung-lung, accompanied by Chairman of the Police Dragon Boat Club, Hong Kong Island Regional Commander Cheuk Chun-yin, and five Honorary Chairmen.

Following nail-biting heats, the Auxiliary Police clinched the Chairman Invitation Cup, followed by the Junior Police Officers' Association and Police Superintendents' Association as first and second runners-up respectively.

On hand to present trophies were Commissioner Tang King-shing, Deputy Commissioner (Operations) Tsang Wai-hung and Senior Directorate Group officers.
