In a bid to strengthen the co-operation and understanding between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, Security Bureau and Border District hosted the 2011 Border District Spring Reception at Police Officers' Club on January 14. The Deputy Secretary for Security, Ms Yip Man-kuen, and Director of Operations Hung Hak-wai attended the function as guests of honour.

Also present at the reception were around 200 guests from the HKSAR Government and the Shenzhen Municipal Government.

The Mainland guests came from various departments of the Shenzhen Municipal Government, including Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, Guangdong Provincial Border Defence Bureau, 6th Brigade of Shenzhen Border Defence Sub-bureau, Shenzhen Exit/Entry Frontier Inspection Station, Shenzhen Public Security Bureau, Shenzhen Port Administration Office, Shenzhen Customs Department and Guangshen Railway Co. Ltd.

HKSAR Government Departments represented at the reception were Security Bureau, Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau, Transport and Housing Bureau, Immigration Department, Customs and Excise Department and Transport Department.

Speaking at the reception, Mr Hung thanked the law enforcement agencies of both governments for maintaining law and order, fighting cross-boundary crimes and stemming out illegal immigration and smuggling, especially for maintaining security at all boundary crossings during the Shanghai World Expo and the Asian Games in Guangzhou last year.

Mr Hung noted that the growing passenger traffic to be brought about by further expansion of the Individual Visit Scheme for non-Guangdong residents in Shenzhen and the "World Universiade Shenzhen 2011" in August, would require proactive efforts by the departments of the HKSAR Government and the Shenzhen Municipal Government and underscore the importance of close co-operation across the border.  In the face of an increasingly complicated environment and emerging challenges, the Force will certainly continue joining hands with other law enforcement agencies in Hong Kong and Shenzhen in contributing to social stability and economic prosperity.

Ms Tang Lixia from the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office of the Shenzhen Municipal Government highly complimented the law enforcement agencies of both governments for their professionalism and close working relationship in maintaining law and order.

Finally on behalf of the Force, Mr Hung wished all guests a happy new year and toasted to the success of the upcoming "World Universiade Shenzhen 2011" in Shenzhen.
