At the mention of Senior Inspector Stanley Yu Sai-kit, what will come to one's mind are his drive and energy for he has, according to Cantonese slang, "as many tentacles as an octopus". He is busily pre-occupied in and outside his work. Besides being an Administrative Support Sub-unit Commander in Marine North Division, Stanley is also Academic Secretary of the Hong Kong Police Inspectors' Association, President of Putonghua Society of Police Chinese Culture Club, Tutor of Boys' Brigade, Vice-Chairperson of Hong Kong Professional Educators and Trainers Association, and Chairman of Mutual Aid Committee. Instead of finding his work boring, he believes "life itself is fulfilling".

Work is fulfilling

Stanley says our mind determines what we feel about our work - exciting or boring. "If we work with heart, we will enjoy what we do; and have fun in work." It was precisely this attitude that had earned him Commanding Officer's Commendation on five occasions. For example, he got commendation for outstanding performance in marine rescue operations. The Putonghua Society he leads had been commended for promoting Putonghua learning within the Force.

During the interview with Psychological Service Group (PSG), good news came that Marine North had won the Green Tips Competition, thanks to his leadership in promoting "green management". Stanley says he has not tried to showcase himself but when he plays his part to serve people, he enjoys being part of something meaningful and tries to do his best.

Learning is fulfilling

Stanley never stops learning. Since joining the Force as a Form 5 student, he has obtained Bachelor's and Master's degrees. After his transfer to Marine Region, he obtained the licence and qualifications related to marine policing. Recently, he has applied for enrolment in a Master's degree programme in social work.

Life is also fulfilling

It took Stanley only five years to get promotion to Sergeant, and another four years to Station Sergeant. But he admitted feeling disappointed at being stuck on the promotion ladder a few years ago. It was his daughter who advised him against being too obsessed with promotion at the expense of his health and the things he liked to do. He heeded the advice and quickly re-adjusted his life.

"I can't change the landscape but I can change my mind. I've decided not to require or rely on anyone to upgrade myself. I will do it myself and find pleasures and satisfaction in life," he noted.

PSG Epilogue:

During the interview, Stanley showed the different herbs from the "Green Corner" he is managing, and served freshly brewed homemade herbal tea - sweet tea with a smell of peppermint leaves. Life can be so good with such simplicity. As Stanley has said, "Don't just live life, but also enjoy it."
