As I come to near the
end of my training for my 20th marathon in the past four years, I take
some time to reflect on running and work. Preparing for and running
marathons is very much like working in the Police. Before running a
marathon it needs good preparation and planning also needs Discipline,
Determination and Decisiveness. Firstly preparation takes several weeks of hard work and there are no short cuts. Need to remain disciplined and determined throughout the training. Even the weather is hot or it is raining, there is still a need to go out to complete the distance. Need a great deal of planning: What race? When? Not too hilly? Do I have the time to prepare? What speed to run? What will be my training programme? All these need to be realistic, taking into account my own abilities. Trying to over estimate my own abilities will not succeed as in my last Macau marathon when I tried three marathons in one month. Preparation also means learning the course, choosing the right hotel, choosing the right clothing and what to eat before the race and during the run. Need to be decisive - once decided on what to do and what to eat then need to stick to that plan. No sudden change at the last minute. No experimenting with things that have not been tested. Determination is certainly important to carry me through the final third of the marathon. As in the MC6 4Ds (Discipline, Determination, Decisiveness and Final Discipline), the final discipline is most important. Self-discipline not to give up, stick to the plan but at the same time being sensible and flexible enough to adjust the plan in the face of changing circumstances. My target is 100 marathons so still a long way to go. Some people say running a marathon is a lonely activity but at my speed I am able to chat and meet people from all over the road and interact with supporters. Training also can be done with other runners as well because overseas trips can be organised with other runners. Running is also not a selfish activity as we have successfully started and organised two running groups in connection with Operation Breakthrough in Tsuen Wan District and Yuen Long District where we train kids at risk to run and give them support. Finally, anyone can complete a marathon if they have the planning, preparation, discipline, determination and decisiveness to complete. So good luck and see you on the road. Mike
