CP's first overseas visit after taking office

Commissioner Tsang Wai-hung led a delegation to visit Canberra, Australia, and Jakarta, Indonesia, between April 18 and 21 - the first overseas visit after taking office as Commissioner - with a view to enhancing police co-operation.

Delegation members comprised Police Tactical Unit Commandant Lo Mung-hung, Liaison Bureau Acting Superintendent Li Kwai-wah and CP's Personal Assistant Kwok Ka-chuen.

In Canberra, Mr Tsang signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Mr Peter Drennan, Acting Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police (AFP). The MOU further strengthens co-ordination between Hong Kong and Australia in policing, setting out a framework for tackling international criminal activities. It also bolsters the partnership in capacity building and professional development between the two jurisdictions. Following the signing ceremony, Mr Tsang held a meeting with senior AFP officers on various policing issues of mutual concern.

The delegation continued its packed schedule in Jakarta on April 19 after the Canberra visit. Mr Tsang first paid a historic courtesy call on Mr Timur Pradopo, Commissioner-General of the Indonesian National Police (INP). The meeting was the highest level of police contact ever between Hong Kong and Indonesia. Mr Tsang then met with senior INP officers, attended their general introduction on INP and visited relevant departments.

Having reached a consensus with INP on strengthening police co-ordination, Mr Tsang noted that the Jakarta visit marked a significant milestone of full bilateral co-operation. Hong Kong would sign an MOU with INP with the purpose of enhancing training and combating such transnational illegal activities as drug trafficking, money laundering and information technology crime.

"It is very important for us to maintain a close and dynamic relationship with our regional partners when it comes to dealing with transnational crime and assisting Hong Kong residents travelling abroad," Mr Tsang noted.
