I
refer to the article "Simon Completes Desert Race 'Triple Crown', Next
Stop Antarctica" on page 7 of OffBeat issue 942.
On behalf of the directors of Operation Breakthrough I would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Simon for his sterling support to the youth programme through his participating in these various grueling challenges and raising a total of $104 165 through sponsorship. These events are extremely physically and mentally demanding and the fact that they are done at Simon's own expense, often in remote places of the world and in his own time, make his efforts all the more praiseworthy, and, in addition to raising funds for the programme, he has helped raised the profile of the Hong Kong Police and Operation Breakthrough. Operation Breakthrough is a registered charity that operates on charitable donations, with principal donors being the Standard Chartered Bank, the Community Chest, the Social Welfare Department, the Hong Kong Jockey Club and the Laureus Foundation. Some funding is self-generated through boxing competitions. The aims of Operation Breakthrough are to provide sporting and other activities, including self-development courses, for young people who are at risk. These activities, which are voluntarily run by serving police officers and assisted by social workers, are aimed at making a difference to the lives of young people, steering young persons at risk away from a life of crime and deterring first time offenders from relapsing.
