Dear Sir,

The early morning calm of February 20, 2011 was shattered by the ringing of the telephone. A family friend was calling from Hong Kong to inform me that my brother had passed away. The unfortunate circumstance of his death was traumatic. The friend gave me the telephone number of the Chaiwan Police Station and eventually to the Investigating Officer, Mr Lai (PC 33575). We communicated over the phone two to three times during which he learned that I planned to go to Hong Kong to take care of my brother's funeral arrangements.

When I arrived in Hong Kong on March 7, I met Mr Lai at the Sub-Unit of the Chaiwan Division. He took my statement regarding my brother, after which he took me to my brother's apartment. There he officially turned the apartment over to me so I can confer with the landlord's representative and to arrange for cleaning and to officially vacate the unit.

The next day we met at the Victoria Mortuary to identify my brother's body. This task was made tenable by Mr Lai's strong but sympathetic lead. Later that day, after work, he delivered a copy of the statement I'd made the day before. Obviously, he must have accomplished that task on his own time; I was very impressed.

All in all, I found Mr Lai professional, efficient and courteous. Fortunately, with him setting the timetable from the start, I was able to complete my mission of bringing my brother's ashes back to the U.S. within 10 days for interment.

M. Wong
