At the invitation by the Psychological Services Group, Dr Ko Wing-man, a well known orthopedic doctor, as well as a hero fighting the SARS epidemic, attended a "Balances and Wisdom" Seminar as a speaker on July 28. Among the audience were Director of Personnel and Training Ma Wai-luk, over 200 Recruit Police Constables and Probationary Inspectors as well as around 150 Force members.

Dr Ko first expressed his appreciation to Force members for their contribution to society, and referred to an international survey that showed most of the citizens in Hong Kong had high regard for the efforts made by the Hong Kong Police. He then spoke of his own experience of suffering from a serious illness and how he had coped with various adversities in life.

Dr Ko reminded the audience: "Don't do any job if you feel you can't remain loyal to the job. Despite the difficulties of a job, do it with your heart and be prepared to take up responsibilities." With this attitude in mind, Dr Ko reminded himself when he became the CEO of the Hospital Authority during the SARS period that once he took up the job, he had to be prepared to step down from the post anytime. Therefore, he focused only on his principles and did his best to fight the immense stress arising from the job.

Dr Ko reminded the younger generation not to aim to become a hero "because heroes are only a product of very special circumstances". "The most important thing is to try your best at your own post and recognise the value of every role in society," he reminded young people.
