Safe cycling project kicked off on Lantau |

Braving the scorching sun on one of the hottest days of this year, Lantau District Commander, Senior Superintendent (SSP) Irene Ho, kicked off on August 14 a project, "Joy Ride Lantau", to spread the message on safe cycling in Mui Wo and Tung Chung. Enlisting the support by over 30 Junior Police Call members, SSP Ho toured the streets on Lantau, a favourite spot for cyclists, and handed out copies of a colourful leaflet designed by her staff to tourists and residents alike. The simple tips offered by the leaflet, such as keeping to the left and cycling in single file, are easy to follow, making riding a bicycle safe without diminishing the fun of the sport. Also out under the sun on the day were two Islands District Councillors, Mr Wong Fuk-kan and Mr Wong Siu-keong, breaking out in a sweat with SSP Ho. Over 3 000 leaflets were handed out on the day. Explaining to OffBeat the purpose behind the activity, SSP Ho pointed out that cycling on Lantau is becoming increasingly popular. As part of her Formation Action Plan, the project mobilised school kids and community leaders of Lantau to run a series of school talks and community events to educate the public on the enjoyment of safe cycling. The activities will continue until autumn months and will culminate with a carnival at the end of the year. ![]() |
