September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day, set by the International Association of Suicide Prevention and the World Health Organisation. International researches have indicated that by enhancing awareness and understanding of suicide, many of the tragedies can be prevented. The Force management attaches importance to suicide prevention and takes the view that suicide prevention is also a responsibility for everybody. To mark the World Suicide Prevention Day, Psychological Services Group invited Prof. Samuel Ho, a world-class authority in Positive Psychology, to share his knowledge of resilience- building at the Balances & Wisdom seminar on September 8 for over 370 officers, including Recruit Police Constables and Probationary Inspectors. Prof. Ho highlighted the importance of remaining hopeful and optimistic in difficult situations. He explained that people having high hopes tended have more flexibility. They would modify their strategies and goals in the face of obstacles; and would also have the will power and motivation to persist in pursuing their goals. Lastly, Prof. Ho encouraged the audience to develop a "habit" of positive thinking so that people would be more likely to remain positive in a challenging situation. |
