Stephen R. Covey, author of the book "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People", proposed a sequence of habits for facing different challenges. He first introduced the motive of Habit Four, "Think Win-Win", to guide our action when co-operating with other people. Then he introduced the skills of Habit Five, "Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood", to listen and understand the views of our counterparts before expressing clearly our own views and opinions. The next step is Habit Six, "Synergize", to reach for the best solution. Former US President George Bush has been quoted as saying: "In crucial things, UNITY. In important things, DIVERSITY. In all things, GENEROSITY." Habit Six "Synergize" helps catalyse, unify, and unleash the greatest power within people. Views are carefully collected. Ranks are temporarily discarded. Supervisors are not regarded as super-gods, nor people with "SuperVISION". The search is not for one-ness, but for sameness; not for uniformity, but for unity. With "Synergy", one plus one is equal to more than two, or even ten, hundred or thousand. "Synergy" is not a new concept. The author pointed out that "ecology" is the word basically describing the synergism in nature. It requires creative co-operation amongst all parties concerned, with differences much valued. In "Synergy", it is not about reaching a compromise. It involves unity, proper use of brain-storming, putting aside the old mindset, and valuing the contribution of each and every team member. The "third alternative" is always there and may not be always conventional. Yet it is the most valuable interaction of the hearts and minds of all those concerned. |
