Dr Pet, a charitable organisation, complimented three Police dogs - Tango, Murphy and Pizza - at a ceremony on October 28 for their services to the community.

Sergeant (Sgt) Chim Ying-cheong and Tango are based at Kai Tak Operational Base. Besides sniffing out drugs and tracking down culprits, the playful yet obedient Tango also assists in locating missing persons. At the age of two and with only months' service, Tango saved a life this summer. Back in July this year, Sgt Chim and Tango located a missing person with suicidal tendency in the area of Shek Lei Pui Reservoir, following an hour-long search on a sweltering summer day. The police search party immediately rushed the critically dehydrated woman to hospital.

Drug Detection Dog Murphy is a three- year old female Labrador under the charge and care of Police Constable (PC) Wu Oi. Posted to the Emergency Unit of Kowloon East, they work together in detecting drugs among crowds. Murphy came from a police family and her previous owner is Senior Superintendent B.J. Smith. When Mr Smith knew the Police Dog Unit needed Labrador for training, he "encouraged" Murphy to join. Soon, she is on the right track, pursuing a successful Police career.

Bouncy and having a sharp sniffing instinct, Murphy, into her second year of service, has cracked many drug cases. On her second working day in Kwun Tong, she sniffed out 2.5 grammes of Ketamine on a suspect. Police further seized another 15 grammes of the drug from the suspect's car. With their continuing efforts in fighting drugs, the pair has earned seven senior officers' compliments.

After completing training in June last year, PC Chan Wai-man and Malinois Pizza were posted to Western District. Pizza is one of the four patrol dogs trained to detect drugs. PC Chan still remembers how Pizza located 13 grammes of Ketamine during a high-rise building patrol. "Pizza wagged his tail, sat in front of a fire hydrant and looked at the hydrant outlet. I immediately checked it out and found the drug," he recalled. Thereafter they continued putting their training into good use and discovered more drugs. In return, they received four compliments from officers as high as Regional Commander.
