At the invitation of Western District (WDIST), 30 secondary school discipline masters and mistresses as well as social workers gathered at Western Police Station on October 7 to share their experiences of handling students breaking school regulations. WDIST laid on the gathering for the teachers and social workers to  improve communication and networking.

Speaking at the forum, Acting WDIST Commander Choy Wise emphasised that his police district had all along adopted a multi-agency approach to further enhance communication and networking with youth workers with a view to tackling youth problems more effectively.

At the forum, the officers in charge of units briefed the participants on the current trend of youth crimes, the triad situation in Western District and information on crimes such as the types of dangerous drugs commonly abused by young people. WDIST hopes such information would help schools to identify problem students at an early stage so that counselling and support can be given in time.

In addition, an officer from the Technology Crime Division of Commercial Crime Bureau discussed with the participants the crimes frequently committed by young people on the Internet and the causes of, and preventive measures for, the pitfalls in Internet, so that the message of crime prevention in the cyber world can be disseminated to young people.

The forum was generally well received by the teachers and social workers because it provided them with a better picture of the youth problems in Western and South districts and, more importantly, helped them establish closer partnership in tackling youth problems.

The three parties now have a better rapport for addressing youth problems
