The importance of organisational system and leadership skills are often the emphases of contemporary management literatures. Stephen R. Covey, author of the popular book, "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People", however opts to be back to the basic in his another book of "The 8th Habit". He stressed the importance of voice, passion, moral and conscience. The 8th Habit, "From Effectiveness to Greatness", centres on two main themes: (1) Find your voice and (2) Inspire others to find theirs. Find your voice
"Find Your Voice" is an important assignment of personal growth. Dr Covey considered that human beings are born with three birth gifts - Gift 1: Freedom To Choose - we have the power and freedom to make the right choice and determine our way of living. Gift 2: Natural Law or Principles - people have to live by principles or natural laws, which are based on moral and conscience and people should not violate them. Gift 3: The Four Intelligences - Physical Intelligence (PQ), Mental Intelligence (IQ), Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and Spiritual Intelligence (SQ). Developing and using these intelligences will profoundly impact your ability to influence others and inspire them to discover their voice. Dr Covey described "Voice" as a unique personal significance that is expressed through the principles of Vision, Passion, Discipline and Conscience. Great leaders often are those who can understand their own nature and birth gifts. They remain highly disciplined though under a very harsh and competitive environment. They try hard to live by conscience and to find their own voice. They in turn can extend their influence and inspire others to find their own potential and self-worth. Inspire others to find their voice
Dr Covey stated that leadership is an art and that its influence is governed by principles. When you live by these principles, your influence and moral authority increase and you are given even greater formal authority. The essence of leadership is to communicate the worth and potential of others so clearly, so powerfully and so consistently that they really come to see it themselves. Dr Covey thought millennium is the Age of Wisdom. We wish you all could make use of the wisdom of leadership acquired from his book. |
