Families of fallen officers thankful for care, support |

The wife of former Station Sergeant (SSGT) Lau Chi-kin of the Central District has thanked the Force for rendering support and care after her husband was killed in a fall from a footbridge whilst participating in an operation to prevent a protester from attempting suicide in June last year. With the assistance of the Force and the Junior Police Officers' Association (JPOA), Mrs Lau succeeded in applying for a grant from the "Financial Assistance Scheme for Family Members of Those Who Sacrifice Their Lives to Save Others" last December. To express their gratitude, Mrs Lau and her daughter, accompanied by JPOA Chairman, Mr Wong Ching, Chairman of Hong Kong Island Region, JPOA, Mr Chan Wai-ming, and Chairman of Kowloon East Region, JPOA, Mr Chan Chok-kwong, paid a courtesy call on Commissioner Tsang Wai-hung on January 11. During the visit, Mr Tsang asked about their present situation. Mrs Lau replied she had a hard time accepting the sudden death of her husband and coping with the ensuring problems. Fortunately she and her family managed to ride out the tough times, thanks to the support and concern from Mr Tsang and the Force, especially Support Wing, Chief Superintendent (Personnel Services and Staff Relations) Bernie So, Welfare Services Group, and officers of Hong Kong Island Region and Central District. Mrs Lau and her family were very impressed with the kindness and unity of the Force. Mr Tsang told Mrs Lau he was pleased she and her daughter had recovered from their ordeal. He also mentioned that he recently received a letter from the parents of the late Police Constable Tsang Kwok-hung, who was killed in a shootout in Tsim Sha Tsui in 2006, telling him they were back on their feet. CP said it was so comforting to see the surviving families having overcome their distress and leading normal life again. JPAO Chairman Wong Ching also thanked CP and the Force for supporting and helping SSGT Lau's family, living up to the spirit of the Force's caring culture. CSP So pointed out that the Committee on "Financial Assistance Scheme for Family Members of Those Who Sacrifice their Lives to Save Others" had provided grants to the families of PC Tsang and SSGT Lau, underscoring public recognition of their ultimate sacrifice. "Force members had worked closely to help the surviving families pull through their traumas with the spirit of 'One Force, One Caring Culture'", he noted. Commissioner of Police Mr Tsang Wai-hung My Genuine Thanks to the Staff of the Hong Kong Police Force I am Ting Chui-ling, widow of SSGT Lau Chi-kin who died on duty on June 15 last year. It was really hard for me to accept the loss of my loved one. However, before my grieving heart even had the time to heal, a number of issues had to be dealt with after my husband's death, such as his funeral, our future accommodation, livelihood and my daughter's education. I was very confused and helpless indeed. Luckily at such difficult times, you, your senior officers and my husband's colleagues gave us full support and showed much concern. A solemn funeral was held for my husband, who was laid to rest in Gallant Garden. Donations were collected and death gratuity was applied on my behalf to help solve problems like our livelihood and my daughter's schooling. Furthermore, my daughter and I are allowed to continue to live in the departmental quarters. These have gone a long way towards easing our burdens and pains. With your help and that from your colleagues, an appeal was lodged with the Labour and Welfare Bureau, resulting in the approval of a grant from the "Financial Assistance for Family Members of those Who Sacrifice their Lives to Save Others Scheme" for my daughter and me. Not only is this a source of financial assistance to us, it also represents the Government's recognition of the bravery of my husband on that day. I know a lot of members of the Force have done their best for my husband. I am sorry I can't thank each and every one of them in person. Having said this, I would like to convey my particular thanks to CSP (PS&SR), Mr Bernie So, and members of the Force Welfare Services Group for offering sincere help and concern to my family at our toughest time. Instead of just carrying out their duties, they helped us pull through and made us feel there is love in humanity. As my husband was attached to HKI Region, I am also very thankful for the help and advice given by Mr Chan Wai-ming, Chairman of the HKI Region of JPOA. My husband had served the Force with great ardor for his entire life. He once said that as a policeman, he had a duty to uphold the rule of law at all times. He was always proud of being a member of the Force, where he had made many great friends. Among his colleagues, Mr Chan Cho-kwong, Chairman of the KE Region of JPOA, was his classmate in the cadet school 30 years ago. "Cho Gor" has been in contact with my family and me since my husband passed away and done many a kind favour for us. I have come to understand what my husband once said about the Force: "A caring and united department". Again, let me express my deepest thanks to CP and police staff for their love for my husband, and the care and support for my family and me. The spirit of my husband must be very grateful and moved by your kind acts. My daughter and I will continue to live with his positive attitude. Lastly, may I wish you and your colleagues all the best in your work and life! Sincerely,
Ting Chui-ling Letter from parents of the late PC Tsang
Kwok-hang
On March 17, 2006, PC Tsang Kwok-hang was on patrol duty with a colleague at the Austin/Canton Road Subway, Tsim Sha Tsui, where he met a culprit and exchanged fire with him. He was killed and was subsequently presented with a bravery award by the Government. In recognition of his ultimate sacrifice, committee members of the "Financial Assistance Scheme for Family Members of Those Who Sacrifice Their Lives to Save Others" approved a grant for PC Tsang's family. The family, with the assistance of PC Tsang's senior officers, his colleagues and welfare officers, went through their grief, overcame difficulties and re-built life. Dear Commissioner Mr Tsang, We are parents of PC Tsang Kwok-hang, who died on duty. Now as Christmas and New Year are near, we would like to convey our most sincere blessings to you and your colleagues on behalf of our family. Our son Tsang Kwok-hang died on duty in a gun battle in Tsim Sha Tsui in 2006. His death left us devastated and helpless. The physical and mental support from your officers and Welfare Office helped us get through our hardest time and rebuild family and personal life. We are very grateful and express our thanks from the bottom of our hearts for the assistance given by the entire Force over the past few years, especially to Assistant Force Welfare Officer, Ms Lolita Ng, for her genuine concern and ongoing consolation and encouragement. Time has gradually healed our pain. Through Force welfare services, our livelihood is well protected and our younger son is able to live with us in Canada, which is a solace to us in our old age after the loss of our son. We are all doing well, spending most of our time living in Canada. Our younger son has started his family. Kwok-hang's best friend Wong Yin-ying (Ah B) is also having a fruitful life and career. Let us express our profound gratitude to all of you who have given us a helping hand, including all senior officers, the Chief Superintendent in charge and his colleagues from Welfare Office as well as those from Kwok-hang's formation...... We are doing fine because of your support! Police duties are challenging nowadays. We are behind you and support all of you! All the best for your health and future endeavours! Yours faithfully, Tsang Po-man & Poon Wai-hing ![]() ![]() ![]() |
