The Junior Police Officers' Association (JPOA) hosted the 2012 Spring Reception in Police Sports and Recreation Club on February 2, with JPOA Chairman Wong Ching and JPOA Ex-officio President, Commissioner Tsang Wai-hung, addressing the gathering. In his speech, Mr Wong said the association would, in conjuction with Police Force Council Staff Side, continue their active involvement in the 2012 Pay Trend Survey currently conducted by the Pay Trend Committee to strive for a reasonable pay adjustment for their members under the established mechanism. Mr Wong also noted that the Force was under close public scrutiny and officers should bear in mind professional integrity both on and off duty and maintain the Force's professional image. Addressing the gathering, Mr Tsang pointed out that the Force managed to surmount difficulties and challenges last year. As a result, the crime situation in 2011 remained stable and violent crime dropped by 3.3 per cent. Speaking of the ultimate sacrifice of former Station Sergeant Lau Chi-kin in June last year, Mr Tsang said this tragedy underlined the courage, enthusiasm and selfless spirit officers displayed whilst serving the community. He added that he sent regard to SSGT Lau's family on behalf of the Force when Mrs Lau and her daughter, accompanied by Mr Wong and two JPOA vice-chairmen, paid him a courtesy call and thanked the Force for what it had done for her family. Mr Tsang also disclosed that he had received a letter from the parents of the late PC Tsang Kwok-hang who made the ultimate sacrifice during a shootout in Tsim Sha Tsui in 2006, telling him they were back on their feet. He hopes Force members would live up to the spirit of “One Force, One Caring Culture” at all times. Looking ahead, Mr Tsang expected 2012 would be full of challenges. The general public's rising expections of the Government, uncertain global economic outlook, advancement of technologies, and social and environmental issues would bring about fast changes in society. He is convinced officers, in face of challenges, would continue to serve “with pride and care” by remaining professional and heeding the general public's aspirations. He added that he was confident JPOA would continue to do its best to promote trust and understanding between JPOs and Force management, as well as the well-being of JPOA members. Deputy Commissioner (Management) Lee Ka-chiu, Deputy Commissioner (Operations) Tang Kam-moon, Honorary Legal Advisers Mr Foo Tak-ching and Mr Kenneth Hau, and Chairmen of the seven Districts were among those who joined Mr Tsang and Mr Wong in drinking a toast to the guests.
