Force Search Unit (FSU) Police Constable (PC) Chan Wan-lung has designed a multi-purpose search camera, which later obtained the utility model national patent issued by the State Intellectual Property Office on the Mainland.

The camera was designed from users' perspectives. While PC Chan was mainly responsible for the design, the Shanghai Public Security Bureau (PSB) Police College took care of the prototype and applied for the national patent. The product is the outcome of a groundbreaking joint venture on development of search equipment between FSU and the PSB Police College, which materialised after FSU conducted in October 2009 a train-the-trainer programme in the PSB Police College on search and security screening for the 2010 World Expo.

Superintendent (SP) Key Points & Search Lee Kiu-ki, together with Senior Inspector Fang Fan and PC Chan, attended the "Shanghai-Hong Kong Security Screening Professional Discussion Meeting" of the 13th Shanghai PSB "Overseas Forum" in Shanghai on February 9 and 10. At the forum, PC Chan received the certificate of the utility model patent for the multi-purpose search camera from the Vice Principal of the PSB Police College. PC Chan also introduced his latest progress in the production of a number of other search equipment.

Shanghai PSB will introduce the patented multi-purpose search camera to other PSBs with a view to enhancing their professionalism and capability in search and screening.

The joint venture between FSU and PSB Police College will go a long way towards enhancing the existing collaboration between the Force and its Mainland counterparts. Hopefully PC Chan's success story would stimulate Force members' interest in advanced technology.
