The "Wan Chai District Outstanding Police Officers' Election 2011" came to a successful conclusion last December when the Under Secretary for Security, Mr Lai Tung-kwok; Wan Chai District Officer, Miss Angela Luk; and Chairman of the Wan Chai District Fight Crime Committee, Mr Lam Sek-kong, presented awards to the winners. The election, organised by the District Fight Crime Committee and Wan Chai Police District and sponsored by District Office, aimed at boosting the morale of frontline officers by offering Wan Chai residents a channel to pay recognition to officers who had come up with exemplary performances. From about 250 nominees who had investigated a total of 33 cases, an adjudicating panel headed by Mr Lam selected 100 winners after conducting a series of interviews and assessments. The winners came from Patrol Sub-units, Task Force Sub-units, Miscellaneous Enquiries Sub-units, District Investigation Teams, District Crime Squads, District Special Duties Squads and Emergency Unit. The cases they had handled included robbery, burglary and pickpocketting. The victims had thanked officers for bringing the culprits to justice while flat owners also had praised them for improving the law and order and hygiene in their buildings by wiping out drug peddling activities there. Among the 15 winning cases, the most prominent one was an armed robbery that occurred in Happy Valley last April. In this case, robbers attacked a man and a woman with knives and dragged the woman into a bush, intending to rape her. Upon receiving a 999 call by a passer-by, Task Force Sub-unit officers saved the woman and apprehended one of the culprits. As a result of the case, the Vice-chairman of Wan Chai District Council, Mr Ng Kam-chun, submitted a nomination for the election as a token of his appreciation. ![]() |
