In a bid to enhance their capability to deal with, as well as awareness of, terrorism, over 200 officers from various Force units and other government departments attended a seminar on violent religious extremism. At the invitation of Security Wing and Police College, Prof Kumar Ramakrishna, Head of the Centre of Excellence for National Security at the Singapore Nanyang Technological University, spoke on the subject of "Violent religious extremism and ways to counter it" at a Management Development Programme (MDP) seminar at Police Headquarters on February 7. Prof Ramakrishna is an internationally renowned scholar in the counter-terrorism realm, in particular about insurgencies in Southeast Asia. He analysed the root causes of religious extremism with reference to social and psychological theories, and illustrated the related problems by outlining the evolution of a notorious terrorist group in the region. During the question-and-answer session, Prof Ramakrishna had an exchange of views with the audience, who, after the seminar, got a better idea of how to tackle religious extremism from a law enforcement perspective. ![]() |
