In light of the prevalence of pickpocketing and miscellaneous thefts in MTR stations and places popular with foreign domestic helpers, the Regional Crime Prevention Office of Hong Kong Island (RCPO HKI) launched a large-scale crime prevention campaign on March 17.  On that day, officers from various districts of HKI Region and Railway District as well as 33 student volunteers acted as Crime Prevention Pioneers to raise public awareness of safeguarding personal property and preventing pickpocketing and miscellaneous thefts.

The "pioneers" delivered crime prevention messages at busy MTR stations such as Sheung Wan, Admiralty, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay, Fortress Hill, and Hong Kong Station. Leaflets and other publicity items carrying crime prevention messages were also distributed in places with massive flows of pedestrians outside MTR stations, like World Wide House in Central and Victoria Park in Causeway Bay.

Continuing to partner with community organisations, RCPO HKI has further extended the Crime Prevention Pioneer scheme in an effort to bring fight crime messages to youngsters, and to make them realise their civic responsibilities through activities organised by the police. The student volunteers have played an active role in distributing anti-pickpocketing and anti-theft publicity leaflets and other items to the public in an effort to remind them to look after personal property.

In response to promotion of civic awareness, RCPO HKI will continue to enlist support and participation by all walks of life in crime prevention, including the younger generation.

A very successful publicity drive
