The first Hong Kong Police Volunteer Services Corps (HKPVSC) Meeting was held in 2005. The former Assistant Commissioner Charlie Cheung, in a bid to promote, develop and coordinate Police volunteer services, convened the meeting and formed a core committee with a group of like-minded officers. After painstaking arrangements, the HKPVSC Secretariat was formally established on June 30 of the same year.

Currently, under the leadership of the Convenor, Assistant Commissioner Lau Yip-shing, over 40 police volunteer teams have registered with the Secretariat and active Police volunteer workers total several thousands. They are offering various services to the elderly, youth and mentally or physically handicapped persons. In addition, they also take part in many other events such as appeal for donation, poverty alleviation, home cleaning, environmental protection, crime prevention, tutorship, sports and crowd management.

HKPVSC Annual Meeting

In 2010, over 4 000 volunteers of the HKPVSC devoted, in average, over one day to serving the community in their spare time. In total, their service hours amounted to a staggering 118 569. With this excellent record, the HKPVSC pulled off the Highest Service Hour Award in 2010 (Public Organisations), which is a great encouragement and motivation for the volunteers who have made a tremendous effort over the years.

At the HKPVSC's annual meeting held at Police Sports and Recreation Club on December 3 last year, Commissioner Tsang Wai-hung presented the Highest Service Hour Award in 2010 (Public Organisations), Long Service Medals in 2010 (Individual) and Best Family Volunteer Teams in 2010 to individual volunteers and volunteer groups. He also thanked all the volunteers for their selfless devotion to helping those in need and encouraged Force members and their families to continue supporting volunteer service.

At the annual meeting, representatives from the Agency for Volunteer Service, Oxfam Hong Kong, Wai Ji Christian Service and Christian Zheng Sheng College introduced their backgrounds and visions, and shared with the volunteers the satisfaction of serving the community.

The meeting ended in a joyful ambience, with HKPVSC members cherishing their gathering and pledging to serve more people in line with the spirit of the HKPVSC.

Those interested to join the ranks of Police volunteers may browse the public website of HKPVSC at http://www.hkpvs.org and contact the representative of the volunteer teams.
