As the victims of street and telephone scams are mostly the elderly, the Regional Crime Prevention Office of Hong Kong Island (RCPO HKI) has been stepping up publicity since last February. One of the publicity projects is a talk to disseminate the related messages to the elderly. Another objective of RCPO HKI is to recruit the elderly audience as volunteers to pass on what they have learned from the talk to their relatives and peers. During the talk, the elderly were given copies of a publicity leaflet, which, besides messages on preventing scams, contains spaces for 20 persons to sign to indicate they have got the messages. After the elderly volunteers return the leaflet, RCPO HKI will show their appreciation with a formal letter. To drive anti-scam messages home more effectively, RCPO HKI staged plays during the talk to illustrate the typical scam cases. On April 20, RCPO HKI presented appreciation letters to over 120 elderly volunteers at the Causeway Bay Community Centre for helping police fight scams. RCPO HKI will recruit more senior citizens for its ongoing battle against scams of different natures. |
