Blitz against fake banknotes as holidays begin

With the Mainland "Golden Week" starting in the first week of May, it is expected that there would be an influx of Mainland tourists to Hong Kong. At the same time, there would be an outpour of Hong Kong visitors to the Mainland during the Birthday of Buddha and Labour Day public holiday. As the increased numbers of Mainland and Hong Kong tourists would boost tourist spending, the public should remain alert to fake banknotes.

Therefore, Commercial Crime Bureau (CCB) held a joint publicity drive against fake banknotes in conjunction with the Shenzhen Bay Port of Tin Shui Wai Division at the Departure Hall on April 27 when Officers handed out leaflets and answered enquiries from the general public on identifying fake banknotes and on the “money-swapping” illegal activity on the Mainland.

The general features of counterfeit banknotes include blurring watermark, smooth banknote surface, no colour change in the denomination numeral in optical variable ink or sharing the same serial number. In the “money swapping” activity, thugs would swap a genuine banknote with a fake one in taxis, unlicensed rental cars, massage establishments and retail stores.

In view of the success of the publicity drive, CCB will continue with education to enhance public awareness of fake banknotes.
