YLDIST endeavours to engage ethnic groups

There are various ethnic groups living and doing business in Yuen Long District. In line with the Force Strategic Direction on "Engaging the Community", Yuen Long District (YLDIST) has spared no efforts in securing support from the local community and fostering understanding among different ethnic groups with a wide range of activities and multi-cultural management.

YLDIST approaches community representatives for organising visits, cultural exchange workshops, sports competitions, anti-crime seminars and volunteer services to engage the community in further improving law and order in Yuen Long.

The management of YLDIST recently visited Non-ethnic Chinese (NEC) community leaders and related organisations to foster cultural exchanges and listen to their views on improving mutual understanding. To make frontline officers more confident and professional in handling ethnic groups, YLDIST invited NEC leaders from Nepal, Pakistan and Nigeria to attend District Training Days to share their cultures, customs and taboos with officers. Through these sharing sessions, frontline officers became more knowledgeable of the NEC community and more sensitive to their cultures, religions and backgrounds.

And to make the NEC community more knowledgeable of local law and order, YLDIST, with the support of mosque leaders, will conduct anti-crime seminars following their Friday Prayer. YLDIST will also arrange volunteers to work with NEC organisations to organise language communication workshops. Furthermore, it will arrange villagers to meet with the NEC community in an effort to reduce misunderstanding that might arise from cultural differences.

With all its interactive activities, YLDIST hopes it would project favourably the Force's image among the NEC and local communities and enlist their support for the fight against crime.

Yuen Long District Commander Tang Ping-keung discusses the differences in cultures with members of the Africa Group in Kam Tin and invites them to join the Cultural Advisor Scheme in his District.
