The Joint Financial Intelligence Unit (JFIU) of Narcotics Bureau (NB) has all along committed itself to broadening officers' vision of the anti-money laundering regime and to boosting their financial investigation capability with training programmes.

Recently, JFIU has held two anti-money laundering seminars with the UK HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) in which, a wide range of anti-money laundering issues and financial investigation techniques were discussed and shared.

On April 26 and 27, two experienced trainers from HMRC, Mr Edward Jones and Mr Anthony Swarbrick, introduced UK's money laundering investigations and civil laws for restraint and confiscation of crime proceeds before an audience of 22 officers from NB, Commercial Crime Bureau and Customs and Excise Department.

Superintendent (SP) FI NB Gloria Yu commented that the seminar was productive and officers were particularly inspired by the availability of civil forfeiture in the UK legal system.

In the following week on May 3 and 4, JFIU & FI NB co-chaired the First Hong Kong - Macao - Australia Anti-Money Laundering Seminar with AFP, where a total of 12 officers from Australia, Macao and the Force discussed  the emerging trends of money laundering in the region and strategies to track down money laundering activities and flows of illicit money.

JFIU SP Ma Ping-yiu pointed out that the discussion was thought provoking and rewarding and that the seminar also underlined the Force's commitment to build an international strategic alliance in the anti-money laundering regime.

JFIU and FI NB will continue to work closely with their partners to tackle money laundering and to provide an opportunity to share experience in this regard. To this end, the next International Financial Investigation Course for overseas delegates will be held in October.

The seminar with AFP draws a total of 12 officers from AFP, Macao Judiciary Police, Macao Financial Intelligence Unit and the Force
