Police Rugby Club has successful overseas tour |
||
The Police Rugby Club (PRC) has embarked on a recruitment campaign to attract new blood to what is becoming one of the world's fastest growing sports after its inclusion in the Olympics from 2016. Rugby offers players an opportunity to take part in a sport that emphasises fitness, camaraderie, teamwork, and self-discipline, besides lots of fun. The club now runs three men's teams and a ladies team for the Hong Kong leagues during the rugby season. In addition, there is a mini rugby section that offers fun filled training sessions to children of Force members every Sunday morning at Police Sports and Recreation Club (PSRC). In an effort to attract more new players, the club will run a Summer Training Programme for adult beginners of both sexes. The programme is open to all Force members (regular, auxiliary and civilian) as well as anyone who has taken a sabbatical absence from the game and fancies lacing up their boots again. The programme will be held every Tuesday evening at PSRC between 7 pm and 8.30 pm, commencing on June 5. Qualified coaches, including the Force's very own Hong Kong international players, Police Constables Tsang Hing-hung and Ade Wong Man-han, will conduct training. The programme provides an excellent opportunity to learn a new sport and keep fit at the same time. No previous experience is needed and no fee is charged. Those interested in joining the beginners training programme is welcome to go to PSRC every Tuesday evening, starting from June 5, and bring along normal sports kits. Recently, two teams of the club - the "Old Bill" men's team and the "Police Sirens" ladies' team, comprising a total of 58 players, completed a match tour to Bangkok. Led by Chief Superintendent Duncan McCosh, the delegation is the biggest one the club has ever sent for overseas tours. Both teams played against the Royal Thai Police, with the ladies first up, in temperature over 45 degrees Celsius. The Force ladies performed magnificently, showing great team spirit and cohesion, and raced into an early lead, with PC Kwok Tsz-ting scoring their first "international" try to lead 5 - 0 early in the first half. However due to a combination of heat and humidity and the skills of the Thai players, the ladies eventually went down 10 - 45, with another try being scored late in the game by Inspector Charlotte Lam Ming-sze . However the team came off the pitch with their heads held high after an excellent all-round performance. Next up was the "Old Bill" and expectations were high after the great performance of the "Police Sirens". Again the hot and humid conditions made life difficult for the "Old Bill" and youth was also on the side of the Royal Thai Police. However the "Old Bill" took the lead, following a try by Club Vice-chairman, Chief Inspector John Carroll, who finished off a fine team try with style. The match then turned into a hard fought tussle between two pretty equally matched teams before the Thais eventually won the game 17 - 7. Following the match, new friends were made and souvenirs exchanged. The great tour bodes well for the future of the club. ![]() |
