At the invitation of Police College, Dr Victor Fung Kwok-king, Group Chairman of Li & Fung Group of Companies, spoke on the topic of "Competing in the Flat World and Network Orchestration: Li & Fung's Experience" at a Management Development Programme seminar at Police Headquarters on July 11.

Dr Fung has held a number of public offices, including chairmanship of the Hong Kong Airport Authority, Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Hong Kong University Council.  He is also the founding-chairman of the Fung Global Institute, an independent and non-profit-making think tank that generates and disseminates innovative thinking and promotes business-related researches on global issues from the Asian perspectives.

In his talk, Dr Fung enlightened the audience with a new kind of organisational architecture, which was built around the idea of coordinating resources outside one's control with network orchestration. Elaborating on the ways of operation, he said the key to the success of a company has shifted from what it is capable of doing itself to what it can connect to. This architecture may well turn out to be the dominant model of any successful organisation in the 21st century.

Attracting over 140 participants, the talk was informative, insightful and interesting. At the question-and-answer session, both Dr Fung and the audience had a good exchange of views.

The voice recording and speaking notes of the seminar are available at the Learning Portal in the Knowledge Management through POINT.
