 'Timeshare Scheme' fraud

How can "time" be "shared"?  "Timeshare Scheme" is a concept of acquiring the right to occupy or use the facilities of hotels or resorts in different countries at a discounted price or free of charge for a specific period of time upon payment of a lump sum membership fee, so that the participant can enjoy a wider choice of hotels or resorts.

Over the years, there have been a considerable number of complaints against "Timeshare" marketing companies in Hong Kong for adopting high-pressure sales tactics to promote membership, and their modes of operation have also attracted public interest.  These companies usually approach customers through cold calls or street surveys.  By offering free gifts, coupons or chances of winning prizes, customers are attracted or induced to attend presentations or promotion seminars in the companies.  Call police for assistance if you were threatened by any of such tactics.

For more information and preventive tips regarding timeshare scheme fraud, surf RTHK's website at www.rthk.org.hk for the episode of "Decoding Commercial Crimes" on  "Police Magazine".  In the episode, artiste Louisa So will call on the general public to beware of this type of fraud.

The next topic of the "Decoding Commercial Crimes" series is “Pyramid Schemes Related Fraud”.
