At the invitation of INTERPOL, the Force has sent Superintendent (SP) Luke Yuen to take up a two-year secondment post on April 1 in the Office of the Special Representative of INTERPOL in the United Nations (UN) in New York.

Mr William Elliott, a former Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, heads the office. Its primary function is to facilitate and enhance co-operation among INTERPOL, UN and more than 30 international organisations in matters of counter-terrorism, transnational organised crime, peacekeeping operations and maritime piracy.  It also works with the senior officials of UN entities to identify resource-sharing opportunities.

Being the first seconded officer to the office as Assistant Director, SP Yuen said of his secondment: "It is a unique opportunity for me to work in the UN system and interact with international entities. There is a lot to learn from the secondment, including global vision, international co-operation, project management, financing and best management practices."

Sharing with Force members the experience of his work in the UN on July 18, SP Yuen provided an overview of the UN and its global counter-terrorism strategy. He also discussed with Force members the effectiveness of the measures taken by the UN as well as his observations from the Force's perspective.
