New Territories North (NTN) Region has rolled out a series of publicity initiatives since last year in an effort to combat and prevent sexual offences and encourage victims to come forward to report the offences to police.

And since early this year, the Regional Crime Prevention Office (RCPO) of NTN has sustained efforts in education and publicity. In education, RCPO NTN joined hands with Police Community Relations Offices in paying joint visits to schools, youth groups and non-government organisations in NTN Region. RCPO also held seminars for young people, where professionals shared their experience about sexual offences with the audience and advised them on how to handle problems if they were sexually abused.

In the field of publicity, RCPO NTN offered to the public through various channels advice on safeguarding personal safety by staging road shows and distributing publicity leaflets at MTR stations and busy public transport interchanges as well as putting up publicity banners or posters at high risk locations of sexual offences.

To step up publicity, RCPO NTN staged a "Kick-off Ceremony for Fighting Against Sexual Offences 2012" at the Landmark North on July 20, with the slogan of "Seeking Help and Standing Up against and Reporting Offences".

Adopting a multi-agency approach, RCPO NTN invited District Social Welfare Officers, District Fight Crime Committee chairmen and representatives from the Association Concerning about Sexual Violence Against Women, Integrated Family Service Centre and youth centres in the Region to officiate at the ceremony with Regional Commander Chau Kwok-leung.

At the ceremony, participating organisations also set up game and exhibition booths on prevention of sexual offences, while singers and school students also pitched in with songs and dancing.
