Since January 2006, the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) has been conducting two modules, namely "Psychology in Policing" and "Social Studies in Policing", for Recruit Police Constable (RPC) foundation training. RPCs will be awarded a Certificate in Law Enforcement and Security Management (LESM) after completing their foundation training. To provide opportunities for officers who completed RPC foundation training before January 2006 to obtain the same qualification, the OUHK started offering a bridging course for those officers in March 2007. Sergeant (SGT) Leung Tat-sang from Complaints Against Police Office, who joined the bridging course last year, said the knowledge and skills provided by the course were useful, adding that he had applied them in his daily jobs to enhance his performance. The award of the Certificate in LESM would benefit his career development because it was a proof of his professional competence and academic achievement, he added. SGT Leung went on to say that by introducing the bridging course, the OUHK provided a study pathway for officers to acquire higher academic qualifications, and that he would take advantage of this arrangement to study an OUHK bachelor programme in LESM after completing the bridging course this year. Ms Grace Au, an OUHK lecturer, said: "Upon completion of the bridging course, students will be granted 30 credits for pursuing higher qualifications in LESM, including diploma, higher diploma and bachelor degree. This arrangement helps officers save time and money in pursuing further studies." "Students of the bridging course will study the 'Social Studies in Policing' module in the semester commencing in October. After this, they will proceed to study the 'Psychology in Policing' module in the following semester in April. In other words, they can complete the bridging course in a year. During duration of the course, lecturers will advise students on the suitable ways to further their studies according to their own needs. Some students who graduated a few years ago are still maintaining contacts with me and ask for my advice on their studies of OUHK programmes. OUHK lecturers will help students and graduates plan their further studies and make the best decisions in programme enrolment and subject selection." The OUHK is accepting enrolment applications for the bridging course, which will commence in October. Those interested may contact the university's Admissions Office at 2768-6601, or Mr Chan Wing-lun of the School of Arts and Social Sciences at 2768-6848 or wwlchan@ouhk.edu.hk for details. |
