Have you ever imagined yourself saving lives in a crisis situation? How can you enhance your professionalism of dealing with a hostage case?  What are the proper initial steps to take while engaging a hostage taker? 

On July 27, three experienced members of the Police Negotiation Cadre (PNC), Officer Commanding PNC, Superintendent (SP) Gilbert Wong, Chief Inspector (CIP) Stephen Liauw and Inspector (IP) Sindy Chan, gave a special presentation in Knowledge Café, and provided answers to the above questions from the views of a Police Negotiator. 

After a warm welcome by the host of the event, Knowledge Champion, Senior Superintendent Cheng Tak-ming, SP Wong spoke of the history and the latest development of the PNC. IP Chan then took over the floor to explain how she, as a Public Events Liaison Officer, engaging members of the public before and during some major public order events by using the communication skills she had learned from basic crisis negotiation training.  CIP Liauw also shared his knowledge of the initial response of a frontline officer during a crisis situation and offered practical tips on the tactics of "Opening Dialogue", "Handling Threats and Demands" and "Buying Time".

The PNC members also shared with the audience the cases they had handled and explained how they had applied negotiation skills practically.
