In an effort to promote the skills of debating and public speaking among Force members, a Police Debate and Speech Club was set up in June to provide a platform for members to practise, and share their views on, communication skills.

On July 24, the club organised a "Welcome Evening" at Police Headquarters to introduce its activities to Force members.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Commissioner (Management) Lee Ka-chiu congratulated the club on having attracted over 100 participants to its first function. He explained why a Police Debate and Speech Club was necessary and stressed that the club would provide a useful platform for officers to hone their skills of speaking before an audience through different exercises and activities.

Mr Lee also looked forward to seeing the younger generation of Force members demonstrate confidence and professionalism in public speaking.

Demonstrations by the guest speakers from the Toastmasters International won long and loud applause from the audience, and echoed the point made by the Club Chairperson, Chief Superintendent Jocelyn Cheung, that "practice makes perfect" for public speaking.

The club is recruiting members and particularly welcomes Junior Police Officers and inspectorate officers. For registration or enquiries, contact the Vice Chairperson (Membership), Superintendent Margaret Chiu Wing-lan, via PEN to margaretwlchiu@police.gov.hk.

Executive Committee members of the Police Debate and Speech Club look forward to a good response to the club's membership drive
