Director of Crime and Security Lo Wai-chung led a three-member delegation to attend the 21st INTERPOL Asian Regional Conference in Amman, Jordan, from September 17 to 19. More than 150 delegates from some 40 countries in Asia, South Pacific Region and the Middle East gathered to discuss issues of mutual concerns, which included cyber crime, terrorism and human trafficking.

With "Innovative Action and Law Enforcement Co-operation in Asia for a Safer World" as the theme, the conference focused on building a collective police response to, and law enforcement capability against, crime threats so as to boost regional and international security.

INTERPOL President Khoo Boon-hui described online scams and cyber crime as emerging major challenges in Asia today. He emphasised that the law enforcement community should adopt a pro-active, innovative and global approach to tackle crimes and equip themselves with adequate resources, sufficient knowledge and well-developed partnership with stakeholders. The INTERPOL Global Complex for Innovation (IGCI), which is scheduled to start operating in Singapore in 2014, would enhance police officers' capability to combat 21st century crime threats, such as cyber crime, and strengthen policing co-operation worldwide, he added.

During the conference, Mr Lo took the opportunity to meet the IGCI Executive Director, Mr Noboru Nakatani. Mr Nakatani expressed his appreciation for the Force's efforts to combat cyber crime and hoped the Force would continue to support the development of the IGCI. In reply, Mr Lo reiterated the Force's commitment to supporting INTERPOL's initiatives, including development of the IGCI, to combat cross-border crime.

The Force delegation comprised Mr Lo, Senior Superintendent (Crime Hong Kong Island) Ma Chi-kin and Liaison Bureau Superintendent Fung Siu-lan
