Railway District (RAILDIST) is committed to maintaining the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) in Hong Kong as one of the safest railway networks in the world. On September 12, RAILDIST and MTR Corporation held the Third Good Passenger Award Presentation Ceremony at Hung Hom Station to commend the awardees for their courageous acts. Featuring the theme of "Beware of pickpockets! Stay alert at all times", the event also aimed at encouraging passengers to help each other at MTR stations and inside train compartments if necessary.

Artistes Leung Lit-wai and Mandy Wong staged an anti-pickpocket drama to disseminate crime prevention messages. Also attending the event were 35 "Senior Smart Cops" and "Little Smart Cops".

RAILDIST Commander Tam Chak-hang and MTR Corporation Operations Director, Dr Jacob Kam, officiated at the event and presented certificates and medals to three "Good Passengers" in recognition of their determination and courage.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Tam pointed out: "Engaging the community is a primary strategic direction of the Police Force. Railway District hopes citizens travelling on MTR would beware of pickpocketing and come forward to report crimes to the police. In doing so, they would help to maintain Hong Kong's railway system as one of the safest public transport networks in the world."

Speaking after the ceremony, Mr Tam made a public appeal: "MTR passengers, particularly the ladies, should take good care of their own safety and belongings. If something untoward happens, they should alert MTR staff and the police. The police always step up patrols inside train compartments and at the crime black spots along the railway line. Plain-clothed police officers are also deployed for fighting crimes."

Praising the awardees and thanking the passengers who take the MTR every day, Dr Kam noted: "As long as every one stays alert and vigilant as the 'Senior Smart Cops' and 'Little Smart Cops' have done, they would help to keep the crime rate of the MTR network at a low level."

RAILDIST and MTR Corporation have been working closely to prevent crimes and encourage the victims and eyewitnesses to come forward to make reports.
