MDP seminar looks into 'demystifying the myths' |
||
At the invitation of the Criminal Intelligence Bureau, Dr Hank Prunckun, an Associate Professor in the Australian Graduate School of Policing and Security, Charles Sturt University, Sydney, spoke on the topic of "Strategic Intelligence: Demystifying the Myths" at a Management Development Programme (MDP) seminar at Police Headquarters on September 26. Dr Prunckun specialises in the study of transnational crimes of espionage, terrorism, drugs and arms trafficking, and cyber-crime. He is the author of numerous reviews, articles, books, and the winner of two literature awards and a professional service award from the International Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence Analysts. Dr Prunckun has served, in strategic research and tactical intelligence capacities, within the criminal justice system during his 28-year career, including almost five years as a senior counter-terrorism policy analyst. Strategic intelligence is often considered as a higher level of research and analysis, and as such it is shrouded in myths and mystic. In fact, it is no more complex or difficult to perform than tactical and operational intelligence. Using the Force's examples and a "lect-orial" style of seminar, Dr Prunckun enlightened the audience by demystifying a lot of the mystic around strategic intelligence. He took the audience through an explanation of the strategic intelligence that made operational police understand how they can use and produce it. His talk was informative, insightful and interesting, widening the scope of thinking. The workshop activity during the seminar also consolidated the audience's understanding in a practical way. Attracting over 100 inspectors and above, particularly those from the Force Criminal Intelligence System family, the seminar was well received. It has echoed the theme of Strategic Intelligence, one of the policy objectives in the Strategic Action Plan 2012-2014. Force members are welcome to revisit the voice recording and PowerPoint presentation of the seminar at the Learning Portal in Knowledge Management through POINT. ![]() |
