RCPO NTN steps up battle against scams |
||
The Regional Crime Prevention Office of New Territories North Region (RCPO NTN) has launched a campaign with the slogan, "Be smart and stay alert to telephone deception". NTN has recruited 67 senior citizens as Anti-crime Ambassadors and trained them up in the ways to prevent telephone deception and crimes in general so that they can help with promotional and educational activities. In the first three quarters of this year, RCPO NTN organised a total of about 400 different anti-deception promotional events, including seminars in centres for the elderly, public housing estates and villages in NTN, to make senior citizens more capable of preventing telephone and other types of deception. On September 26, RCPO NTN displayed anti-deception banners and distributed leaflets at busy locations during the morning rush hours to work or school in a bid to bring the anti-telephone deception campaign to as many members of the public as possible within a short time. On October 8, RCPO NTN kicked off the Prevention of Telephone Deception - Bus Parade 2012 at the compound of Tai Po Police Station as another publicity effort. Officiating at the kick-off ceremony were NTN Regional Commander Chau Kwok-leung, the Regional Social Welfare Officers, the chairpersons of District Fight Crime Committees, the District Commanders in NTN and Cecilia Fong Yi-kei, a famous singer, who was appointed Anti-deception Ambassador at the ceremony. Following the ceremony, District Fight Crime Committee members, officers from RCPO NTN and police Districts in NTN and the Anti-crime Ambassadors boarded an open-top bus and headed off to MTR stations, bus terminuses, markets and money changers in NTN to distribute publicity leaflets. During the parade, a recorded message by Cecilia Fong was broadcast, updating the general public on the modus operandi employed by swindlers and appealing to them to beware of all kinds of scam. RCPO NTN will continue to organise more promotional activities, including a Chinese opera in Yuen Long Theatre early next year to bring anti-deception messages to more members of the local community. ![]() |
