CDIST tries out traffic plan for Lan Kwai Fong |

Central District is a hub of business, travel and entertainment, with a very busy pedestrian and vehicular traffic, especially in Lan Kwai Fong, a major attraction for both tourists and locals. The tourists and Lan Kwai Fong patrons have a great demand for public transport. When MTR and bus services stop after midnight, taxis are in great demand. As a result, unscrupulous taxi drivers put up the "out of service" sign to select passengers, overcharge passengers or even refuse to accept hire in the early hours of Friday and Saturday. Central District (CDIST) is adopting a two-pronged approach to deal with the problems arising from the increases in pedestrian and vehicular traffic flows in Lan Kwai Fong. On one hand, it steps up law enforcement with decoy operations targeting the unscrupulous taxi drivers and on the other hand conducts a research and feasibility study of a traffic improvement plan, including a temporary traffic arrangement in Wellington Street. On October 20, members of the Central and Western District Council, including the Chairman, Mr Yip Wing-shing, District Officer (Central and Western), Miss Cheryl Chow, and representative from Transport Department visited the temporary taxi pick up point in Wellington Street. ![]() |
