Cyber crime investigation relies on the close co-operation among law enforcement agencies. Each year, the cyber crime units in Asia and South Pacific Region gather together to discuss the latest cyber crime situation and exchange good practices. This year, INTERPOL and the Korean National Police Agency (KNPA) jointly hosted the annual meeting of the INTERPOL Group of Experts on IT Crime Asia and South Pacific (EGASP), the 14th meeting in a row.

Senior Superintendent (SSP) Yu Tat-chung and Chief Inspector (CIP) Ip Wai-kin, both from the Technology Crime Division of Commercial Crime Bureau, attended the meeting alongside 20 participants from eight other countries and jurisdictions. At the meeting, election of the EGASP Chairperson and two Vice-chairpersons was held, and following deliberation, SSP Yu was elected Chairperson, while representatives from Thailand and Japan were elected Vice-chairpersons.

After the election, SSP Yu chaired the meeting and led discussions on training in IT crime investigation and computer forensics, international operation and research and development on computer forensics. The INTERPOL provided an update on the progress of establishment of the INTERPOL Digital Crime Centre in Singapore while representatives presented their cyber crime situations.

CIP Ip, as a Training Project Leader, led discussions on issues concerning train-the-trainer workshops on IT crime investigation and computer forensics. The forthcoming Train-the-Trainer Workshop on Computer Forensics is expected to be held in Hong Kong in May next year.

After the annual meeting, the Force delegates were arranged to visit the National Cyber Security Centre in Korea and the designated cyber crime investigation unit of the Seoul Seongbuk Police Station. Indeed, the experience and good practices of the KNPA have high reference value to Commercial Crime Bureau in establishing a Cyber Security Centre in Hong Kong and formulating strategies to tackle the upsurge of cyber crimes.
