Superintendent Leung Sai-kau and Senior Inspector Damien Chan, from Traffic Kowloon West (T KW), visited the Traffic Support Group, Performance Management and Reporting Service, and Business Service of South Australia Police (SAPOL) from November 10 to 16.

The objective of the visit was to study the technological development, enforcement and policy-making of the traffic policing in South Australia and to identify good practices that may have reference value for enhancing traffic enforcement and control tactics in Hong Kong.

SAPOL’s investigations of traffic accidents involving heavy vehicle and drug and drink driving as well as the power to impound vehicles are different from those in Hong Kong. Therefore, the visit offered the two officers a great opportunity to exchange views and experience with their South Australia counterparts.

SAPOL has just launched their newly developed Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system, which focuses on vehicles rather than personal particulars. The system alerts patrol officers whether a vehicle is on the wanted list, licensed or insured. While successfully detecting offences, the system also enhances road safety at the same time.

The visit has established a communication channel and strengthened liaison between SAPOL and the Force.
