Emergency Units (EU) started competing for the Wimbush Trophy in 1995 when Superintendent Charlie Wimbush was in charge of EU Kowloon West. In 2009, EU New Territories North revived the competition as an annual event in a bid to enhance the professionalism of EU officers.

The competition brings together teams and commanders from all the five regional EU for a variety of challenges to their physical strength, marksmanship, tactical application, and ability to resolve crises. Success requires both individual ability and teamwork.

Winning the trophy is a great pride for EU. The annual event is also an important opportunity for EU officers to get together and display mutual support.

On November 24, the teams gathered at Police Tactical Unit Headquarters for four challenges of the 2012 competition: a rowing relay to test action at the scene of an incident, an emergency turnout with vehicles and roadblocks, a tactical room entry, and use of EU weapons.

After a very challenging day, EU New Territories South (NTS) emerged as winner, and EU NTS Superintendent Mark Steeple received the trophy from NTS Regional Commander Yu Mun-sang.

Speaking after the presentation, Mr Yu stressed the importance of professionalism, continuous improvement and teamwork for EU officers as first responders.  He appreciated the strong bond of comradeship among team members, which, he noted, would be vital to handling of major incidents.
